This fundraiser supports a two-part effort: continuing to support our six students from Kakuma through the rest of secondary school, and completing the next step of the ILEPU project in Samburu. Every contribution, big or small, gets us closer to the goal.

Six students, one year from graduating
Kakuma is a real refugee camp in Turkana County, Kenya. Today it hosts over 314,000 registered people, 61% of them 18 or younger. The schools inside the camp aren't enough: only 6% of eligible students reach secondary school.
We support six students: Rachel, Audrey, Changun, Nyayan, Kani and Angelic. They're a mixed group from South Sudan and Burundi who have spent most of their lives in the Kakuma camp. They have a bit more than a year of secondary school left.
With and through Nielimishe Foundation, we cover school fees, equipment and boarding costs. During the holidays we also provide accommodation, food and extra tutoring, to help them catch up with students who haven't had to face a difficult, underserved system like Kakuma's.

ILEPU: fencing the land, the next step
The second goal is ILEPU, the school complex we're building in Samburu County for underprivileged students, both from the area and from the Kakuma refugee camp. Why a new school, if there are others already? Because there aren't enough: classrooms hold 50, 60, even 70 students, school fees are a barrier, and so is distance. We want to offer a school that's high quality, sustainable and free for as many students as possible.
We've already bought the land and completed the hydrogeological survey to find the best spot for a borehole. Before construction can start, though, we need to fence the property: to protect it from wildlife, like elephants, that could damage future work, and to set clear boundaries.
